FERRY POOL
The upper most pool of the beat fishing best in Spring and Autumn with water level of 2-3’. In September and October large numbers of salmon can congregate in the pool before running in the River Brann which enters the Tay just half a mile upstream.
Only fishing from right bank and from boat. A typical spinning- and harling pool but casting a fly from the boat can be very effective at the tail of the pool or towards the left bank.
ST. MARY’S STREAM
A classic 300 yds long fly-fishing pool fishing very well from 2’ water level and down. Fishes best from the left bank starting at the fast current below the Eastwood House.
The pool has a deep channel towards the right bank that can be covered by wading from the left bank. However, salmon are passing the fast shallow water at the top of the pool close to the left bank and therefore can be taken all over the pool.
DEAN’S BURN
A deep channel close to the left bank well suited for both spinning and fly-fishing. Excellent for spinning up to a water level of 3’ as well as suited for fly-fishing at water level 0.6” to 1’6”. Can be waded at lower water levels.
FIEDLERS
Start fishing from the croy at the top of the pool. Suited for both spinning- and fly-fishing. Same water conditions as for Dean’s Burn. Difficult to wade – only bank fishing recommended.
THE TRAP
One of the most productive pools of the beat. Fishes equal good with fly and spinner and always from the left bank. Water level from 0” to 1’6” fishes best. If water level is below 0.6” you can wade out in the top of the pool and cover a great part. There is a 16’ deep hole in the middle of the pool (hence the name) always holding fish. The V-shaped tail of the pool is the most productive with most salmon laying on the right arm of the “V”.
THE COTTER
One of the most iconic and productive pools on the Newtyle beat directly in front of the fishing hut. Approx. 500 yds of perfect water for both fly and spinning.
The Cotter is normally fished from the left bank and runs best when water is 1´6” to 3’6” high. When water is over 2’6” no wading is needed as fish lies close to the bank and no long casts are required. Also close to the left bank you find more than 25 bigger stones subsurface securing perfect lies for the salmon.
In low water you can wade and fish from the right bank starting by a draining pipe approx. 200 yds upstream the hut.
THE BOIL
Another classic holding pool with a reputation of producing salmon in excess of 20 lbs every year.
The Boil fishes at all water heights – the higher the water the closer the fish lie to the left bank and no wading is needed. In the middle of the pool a big underwater rock has created an 18’ deep hole always holding fish. In low water the fish lie in a line of 20 yds behind the rock.
THE STEPS
Fishes well in most heights up to 3’ and holds fish throughout the season. In high water the fish lie close to the left bank but as the water drops the fish tend to lie more to the right bank. The Steps can be fished spinning from both sides and by the fly wading from the left side.
In lower water the current slows down by the end of the pool but keep fishing and maybe move the fly by retrieving it.
PLAIN TREE POOL
This is an 80 – 100 yds long deep hole/channel close to the right bank. Suited for spinning from the right bank and harling. Plain Tree very often holds big fish – spring 2023 a 27 lbs Salmon was taken here.
LAIRDS BANK
A 10 yds wide and 150 yds long deep channel (approx. 10’ deep) close to the right bank. Can be fished with both fly and spin from the right bank.
THE ALDERS
This is a 150 yds long pool fished wading from the left bank. Three big stones were placed here many years ago and creates perfect resting spots for the salmon having just passed the fast Island stream. Fishes best from 1’ to 1’6” but fish will lie here under all heights.
WILLIES CROY
A short pool only fished from the croy. Fishes in all water heights but best when 1’ to 1’6” level.
ASH TREE (THE NECK)
A short pool just above the fast current between the Island and the left bank. Fish normally rest here for a short while after having passed the current. Can also be fished wading upstream from the Island side.
HOLE IN THE MEADOW
A deep 40 yds long hole close to the right bank. Normally only fished by harling.
ISLAND POOL
The stream between the Island and the left bank. Most of the Tay goes through this narrow channel with a very hard current and as such the pool only fishes at low water – 3” and down. Only fishing from the Island side is possible where you only have access by boat.
